Wings of Amazonian butterflies

This work was presented in the exhibition TRACING THE ROOTS, a bricolage show held at HILLSIDE TERRACE. It was created using butterfly wings from an Amazonian butterfly collection assembled by Yoshihiko Yamaguchi, Director of the Tsuruoka Amazon Nature Museum. The wings used in this work had lost their value as scientific specimens and were generously provided for artistic use.

While handling the diverse wings, my attention was drawn to the eye-like patterns found on Morpho butterflies, which led me to an interest in mimicry. These markings, which appear “face-like,” are believed to have evolved to confuse the vision of predators. By resembling the eyes of snakes or owls—natural enemies of birds—the patterns may cause birds to hesitate momentarily, thereby contributing to the butterfly’s survival.

In this work, I extracted and combined these eye-like patterns, layering multiple wings to construct the image of a fictional creature that appears only within the mirror.
